A PhD student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has reportedly been kidnapped within the school premises, sparking widespread concern over campus security and the safety of students and staff.
According to preliminary reports circulating on social media and within the university community, the unidentified doctoral student was allegedly abducted near one of the academic buildings late on Tuesday evening. Eyewitnesses claimed that the victim was approached by unknown assailants and forcibly taken away under circumstances that remain unclear.
While the university is yet to release an official statement confirming the incident, students have raised alarm, calling for immediate intervention from both school authorities and local law enforcement agencies.
“We are living in fear. If someone can be kidnapped inside the university, where are we truly safe?” a student who requested anonymity told WorldWire News.
The incident has triggered growing frustration among members of the university community, many of whom say that security on campus has deteriorated in recent months, especially during evening hours. Some students have accused the school’s security department of laxity and have called for the deployment of armed patrol teams and enhanced surveillance.
Efforts to contact the university’s Public Relations Officer for comment have so far been unsuccessful. However, sources say internal meetings are being held between school management and local security operatives to verify the details and take action.
Local police in Nsukka have neither confirmed nor denied the incident, but a senior officer who spoke off the record said they are investigating a report of a “possible abduction” on university grounds.
The alleged kidnapping has raised broader concerns about rising insecurity across Nigerian universities, where cases of theft, harassment, cultism, and now suspected abductions are becoming more frequent.
Parents and student unions are now urging the Federal Government, university authorities, and security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of safety in tertiary institutions.
This is a developing story. More updates will follow as details emerge.
