Authorities in Benue State have announced the arrest of several suspects in connection with the recent deadly attack in Yelwata, which left multiple residents dead and thousands displaced.
At a press briefing held on Sunday, June 22, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, confirmed the arrests but withheld the identities of the apprehended individuals. He credited the success of the operation to the support of Governor Hyacinth Alia, noting that enhanced security deployments ordered by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun have already been completed.
“These arrests were made possible through the commitment of the state government and the federal security structure. Officers have now been deployed to rural communities to strengthen grassroots policing,” Emenari said.
The Commissioner also urged landlords, hotel owners, and community leaders to carry out proper screening of tenants and guests to prevent criminal elements especially terror suspects from infiltrating local communities.
The arrests follow a violent assault last week on Yelwata, in the Guma Local Government Area, reportedly carried out by suspected herdsmen. The attack claimed several lives and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, sparking renewed calls for improved rural security and intelligence gathering in the region.
