Top Boy and Blue Story star Micheal Ward has been formally charged with multiple counts of sexual offences, marking a serious legal development in the career of one of Britain’s rising actors.
The 27-year-old actor, originally from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, is accused of two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police. The charges relate to a single alleged victim and are said to have taken place in January 2023.
Ward is scheduled to appear before Thames Magistrates' Court in East London on August 28, 2025.
Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, leading the Metropolitan Police’s investigation, emphasized the sensitivity of the case:
“Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports.”
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed the charges following a thorough review of evidence. Catherine Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, stated:
“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Micheal Ward with serious sexual offences relating to an incident in January 2023.” She also underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of the judicial process: “These proceedings are now active, and it is essential that reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online does not prejudice the suspect’s right to a fair trial.”
Ward, who won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020, is known for his acclaimed role as Jamie in the hit Netflix series Top Boy, as well as performances in Blue Story, Empire of Light, and Lovers Rock the latter earning him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2021.
Born in Jamaica and raised in the UK, Ward was also recently cast in the upcoming pandemic-era western Eddington, which is slated for UK release next month.
As the legal process unfolds, the public and media are urged to refrain from speculation, ensuring due process is upheld. The case represents a significant and sobering moment in the career of one of the UK’s most prominent young talents.
