JACKSON, Miss. The gospel community is mourning the loss of a legend. “Mama” Mosie Burks, a cherished and iconic member of the Mississippi Mass Choir, passed away on July 7, 2025.
Known for her electrifying performances of classics like “When I Rose This Morning,” Burks was more than a singer she was the heart and soul of the choir. Her powerful voice, radiant spirit, and unwavering faith touched audiences across the globe, inspiring countless souls and embodying the true mission of gospel music.
While her physical presence will be deeply missed, those who loved her take comfort in knowing she spent her life singing about this very moment. As she often proclaimed,
“There’s a great coronation coming up, filled with joy and gladness, and the special guest attending will be all the children of the Lord.”
Early Monday morning, with her heart prepared and spirit ready, God called her home, and she boarded her Heavenly flight a moment she had sung about for decades.
The Mississippi Mass Choir and the Burks family kindly ask for prayers during this time of remembrance and reflection. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
