Speaking at his Turnberry Golf Club in Scotland alongside UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Trump expressed frustration over what he described as repeated Russian betrayals in ceasefire negotiations.

“We thought we had it settled numerous times,” Trump told reporters. “Then missiles start flying into Kyiv, and innocent civilians are dying, nursing homes hit, bodies on the streets. I’m not waiting anymore.”

Originally, Trump had given Russia a 50-day deadline ending on September 5 to end its invasion or face punitive measures, including 100% tariffs on all countries doing business with Russia. That included China, India, and others.

But on Monday, Trump cut the deadline short by nearly 75%, citing “deep disappointment” in Putin’s ongoing aggression and his repeated breaches of tentative agreements.

“He kills people. Every time we talk peace, rockets fly. I don’t like it. I’m not so interested in talking anymore,” Trump added.

Trump’s renewed hardline stance comes amid a fresh wave of Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv and other cities. On July 28, a drone strike hit a Kyiv apartment building, injuring civilians, including children. Ukraine’s Air Force reported over 328 drones and seven missiles launched, primarily targeting military air bases.

Andriy Yermak, chief adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, applauded Trump’s pressure tactics.

“Putin respects only power. Trump’s firm stance sends a loud and clear message,” Yermak said.

The potential fallout of Trump’s ultimatum extends beyond Russia. The threatened tariffs on nations trading with Russia notably China and India could trigger a global trade disruption not seen since the height of the U.S.-China trade war.

With markets already volatile due to oil supply disruptions and shifting military alliances, Trump’s shortened timeline has alarmed investors, diplomats, and humanitarian organizations alike.

Despite a third round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks held in Istanbul on July 23, no substantial breakthroughs have occurred. Talks were limited to prisoner exchanges and body repatriation, falling far short of any ceasefire commitments.

The Kremlin has ruled out a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky, but left open the possibility of a Trump-Putin summit in Beijing this September, an event that could prove pivotal depending on whether Putin responds to Trump’s warning.

Donald Trump’s accelerated ultimatum to Vladimir Putin marks a defining moment in the war in Ukraine. By tightening the timeline and ramping up threats of economic retaliation, the U.S. president is staking his foreign policy legacy and global peace on a high-stakes countdown.

As the 12-day deadline ticks away, the world waits to see: Will Putin blink, or will the conflict spiral into a deeper global crisis?
