The Nigeria Police Force has officially dispelled rumors surrounding a viral video depicting a school-aged girl smoking cannabis, clarifying that the incident did not occur in Nigeria, as widely speculated, but rather in Zimbabwe.

In a statement released this morning, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, addressed the misinformation that has been circulating across WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and other social media platforms. The video, which shows a young girl smoking what appears to be cannabis while surrounded and cheered on by classmates, sparked widespread public outrage in Nigeria after being falsely attributed to a local school.

“Our preliminary investigation reveals that the video did not originate from Nigeria. Key indicators, including the language spoken in the video, point to Zimbabwe as its true location,” Adejobi stated.

He explained that the individuals in the footage were speaking a combination of English and Shona—the latter being a language widely spoken in Zimbabwe and parts of Southern Africa. Notably, no Nigerian languages or recognizable accents were present in the video. Further analysis confirmed that the original upload was posted on Instagram via @rusape_celebs_tv, an account based in Rusape, Zimbabwe.

The Police spokesperson urged the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified content, especially when such material has the potential to damage reputations or incite public anxiety.

“The Force strongly encourages responsible sharing of information and thorough verification of sources before amplifying potentially harmful claims,” Adejobi emphasized.

This clarification comes amid increasing concern over the spread of misleading or emotionally charged content on social media, especially involving children or schools. The police continue to monitor online spaces and reiterated their commitment to ensuring accurate public communication.
