Lafia, Nigeria — May 2025 | WorldWire News
In a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s ongoing crackdown on arms trafficking, the Nasarawa State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 21-year-old female arms runner, leading to the recovery of a significant cache of live ammunition.
According to police authorities, the suspect was apprehended along the Akwanga–Lafia highway during a targeted intelligence-led operation. The young woman, whose identity has not yet been officially disclosed for security reasons, was reportedly transporting 481 rounds of live ammunition concealed within a commercial vehicle.
🚓 Tactical Interception & Recovery
The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Tactical Team, acting on credible intelligence about a planned arms movement through the central region of the state. Acting swiftly, officers flagged down the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a thorough search, during which they discovered multiple magazines filled with 7.62mm ammunition, commonly used in assault rifles such as the AK-47.
According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ramhan Nansel, the suspect attempted to deceive the officers by claiming to be a student heading to a wedding in Jos. However, inconsistencies in her responses and suspicious behavior prompted further inspection, which led to the startling discovery.
“This arrest represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal arms trade in Nasarawa and neighboring states,” DSP Nansel said during a press briefing. “The recovered ammunition was most likely intended for criminal elements operating in the North Central zone.”
🎯 Criminal Networks Under Scrutiny
This incident comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across Nigeria, particularly in the North Central and North West regions, which have seen rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes.
Authorities believe that women are increasingly being used as couriers by armed criminal groups in an attempt to evade detection. A police intelligence source indicated that this arrest could be part of a wider network supplying ammunition to violent non-state actors in Benue, Plateau, and Kaduna states.
“Female traffickers are often underestimated and less likely to be searched thoroughly,” the source said. “This strategy is part of evolving tactics by arms smuggling syndicates.”
Legal Proceedings Underway
The suspect is currently being detained at the Nasarawa State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lafia and will be charged with illegal possession and transportation of military-grade ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the arms network and possible accomplices.
Police officials confirmed that forensic examination of the ammunition has begun, and intelligence gathered from the suspect is being shared with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps to track supply routes and potential end-users.
State Government Commends Law Enforcement
Reacting to the development, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule lauded the efforts of the police and called for increased vigilance across all security agencies.
“The arrest of this young woman and the seizure of nearly 500 rounds of live ammunition is proof that our security architecture is working,” Governor Sule stated. “We will continue to support the police and all law enforcement bodies in their mission to secure lives and property.”
A Wake-Up Call
This arrest underscores the increasingly complex dynamics of Nigeria’s security landscape. The involvement of young civilians—especially women—in arms smuggling operations highlights the urgent need for expanded intelligence gathering, border control reinforcement, and community engagement programs aimed at deterring youth from being recruited into criminal enterprises.
As Nigeria prepares for upcoming security reforms, the Nasarawa bust serves as a reminder that the war on arms trafficking requires collaboration, proactive intelligence, and strategic intervention at all levels.
