Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent condolence visit to Benue State, accusing him of turning a moment of national mourning into a political spectacle.

In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), Obi said Tinubu’s conduct and choice of attire—appearing in a celebratory ‘agbada’—were grossly inappropriate, given the backdrop of tragedy in both Benue and Niger States, where over 200 Nigerians were killed in recent attacks and floods.

“This was not a time for ceremony or applause,” Obi said. “It was a time for silent compassion and national reflection.”

He condemned the Benue state government for declaring a public holiday and closing schools to organize a warm welcome for the president, rather than facilitating prayers or community support for grieving families. According to Obi, children who had lost classmates and parents were instead made to perform songs and dances under the rain.

Calling the event a “charade,” Obi lamented that Nigeria is losing its moral compass, with condolence visits being reduced to campaign-style rallies. He drew comparisons with leaders like President Ramaphosa of South Africa and Prime Minister Modi of India, who have made similarly solemn visits without political fanfare.

Obi further criticized the resources and logistics used for the visit, stating that such efforts would have been better spent on relief for the affected—providing food, medical care, shelter, and trauma counseling.

“We are not at war, yet our people are being massacred—and we celebrate?” Obi asked. “It’s not just insensitive. It’s dangerous.”

President Tinubu, during his visit, had assured that his administration would work with Governor Hyacinth Alia to restore peace in Benue. However, Obi concluded by warning that when national grief is turned into entertainment, “our nation is slowly losing its soul.”
