In a significant cross-border drug trafficking case, Indian authorities have arrested a 34-year-old Nigerian woman in Mumbai for possession of cocaine valued at over ₦254 million (Rs 1.42 crore). The arrest marks another alarming development in the rise of international narcotics operations.
The suspect, identified as Yenna Christina Idowu from Ondo State, Nigeria, was apprehended in the early hours of Monday, June 30, 2025, by officers from the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Versova police in the Old MHADA area of Andheri West, Mumbai.
Acting on suspicious behavior observed around 3AM, law enforcement officials, along with a female officer, conducted a search and discovered 30 capsules containing approximately 418 grams of high-grade cocaine concealed in her bag.
During preliminary interrogation, Idowu disclosed she currently resides in Noida, New Delhi. Authorities believe she is part of a broader drug trafficking syndicate and have launched a comprehensive investigation to identify her suppliers, handlers, and intended recipients of the narcotics.
She has been charged under multiple sections of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
Broader Implications
This arrest adds to growing concerns about the expanding footprint of international drug cartels using African nationals as couriers. It also underscores the increasing collaboration between African and Asian criminal networks in the global narcotics trade.
Authorities in both India and Nigeria are expected to intensify efforts toward dismantling these transnational operations.
