Former PSG superstar and current Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has filed a lawsuit against his former club, Paris Saint-Germain, accusing them of “moral harassment” and seeking €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages.
Kylian Mbappé’s legal action marks a dramatic escalation in his already strained relationship with PSG. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the lawsuit, which centers on Mbappé’s claims of psychological mistreatment and financial breach of contract.
The 25-year-old French forward alleges that PSG subjected him to unjust exclusion from the team after he made it clear in mid-2023 that he would not be renewing his contract. Despite having delivered five Ligue 1 titles and becoming the club's all-time top scorer with 256 goals, Mbappé’s final season in Paris ended in controversy.
Claims of 'Lofting' and Isolation
The lawsuit highlights the practice of "lofting", a controversial form of punishment in French football where players are isolated from the main squad. According to Mbappé's legal team, he was forced to train with PSG’s fringe players, excluded from the club’s high-profile preseason tour of Japan and South Korea, and left out of the opening Ligue 1 match of the 2023–24 season.
Though he was eventually reinstated into the squad, the damage had already been done. Mbappé argues that these actions were retaliatory and designed to pressure him into activating a one-year extension clause in his contract something he had already declined.
Broken Promises and Contract Controversy
Much of the tension stems from what Mbappé describes as a betrayal of trust. In 2022, PSG presented him with the most lucrative contract in their history, projecting a public image that he had committed until 2025. However, the fine print revealed a shorter-term deal expiring in 2024 with an optional extension clause.
Mbappé reportedly grew disillusioned with the club’s direction, citing unmet promises especially regarding squad reinforcements as a major reason for his refusal to extend. When he formally informed the club in June 2023 of his intention to leave, PSG tried to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
The club even accepted a €300 million bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, the largest offer in football history at the time, but Mbappé rejected it outright.
From Hostility to Triumph
Despite the off-field drama, PSG went on to win the UEFA Champions League in 2024 ironically, without their star forward in the final phases. Meanwhile, Mbappé made his long-anticipated move to Real Madrid on a free transfer that summer, where he was unveiled to tens of thousands at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Yet the legal battle has continued to cast a shadow over his PSG exit. Mbappé’s legal team formally announced in April 2025 their intention to sue the club, and the case now threatens to stain what was once a celebrated partnership between the French prodigy and Qatar-backed PSG.
What’s at Stake?
The outcome of this lawsuit could set a legal precedent in football, particularly concerning player treatment, mental health, and contract obligations. It also raises uncomfortable questions for clubs regarding how they handle internal disputes when star players exert their contractual leverage.
While PSG remains tight-lipped, legal and sporting analysts are watching closely. A verdict in Mbappé’s favor would not only cost PSG tens of millions but also damage its reputation among elite players considering a move to the French capital.
Conclusion: Beyond the Glory, a Growing Rift
Mbappé’s time at PSG was filled with goals, trophies, and records—but behind the glamour lay fractures that are now playing out in court. As both parties brace for a protracted legal clash, the world watches to see whether this latest chapter in the superstar’s story will end with justice or more controversy.
