A man accused of deliberately driving into crowds during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade now faces 24 additional charges, including multiple counts involving children. The incident, which occurred on May 26 near the Liver Building, left over 130 people injured and cast a shadow over what was meant to be a day of celebration.
Paul Doyle, 53, appeared in tears via videolink from prison at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday. Originally charged with seven offences, Doyle now faces a total of 31 charges, including:
23 counts of assault
1 count of affray
2 counts of wounding with intent
2 counts of grievous bodily harm with intent
2 counts of attempted grievous bodily harm
1 count of dangerous driving
Six of the new charges involve children, including infants aged six and seven months. Two of the original charges also relate to minors aged 11 and 17.
Doyle, dressed in a grey T-shirt, did not enter any pleas during the brief 20-minute hearing. Judge Andrew Menary KC adjourned the case until September 4, when Doyle is expected to respond to the charges.
The alleged attack took place just after 6 p.m. on Water Street, as thousands of fans were leaving Liverpool’s waterfront following the club’s Premier League title parade. Merseyside Police reported that Doyle drove a Ford Galaxy Titanium into the crowd, injuring 134 people.
“This was a deeply distressing event that turned a moment of joy into tragedy,” said a spokesperson for Merseyside Police.
A provisional trial date has been set for November 24, with proceedings expected to last three to four weeks. The case has drawn national attention due to the scale of the injuries and the high-profile nature of the event.
The incident has reignited discussions around public safety at large-scale events in the UK. Authorities are reviewing crowd control protocols and emergency response measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
