Germany is mourning the loss of lives following a tragic train derailment in the Biberach district of Baden-Württemberg, where at least three people have been confirmed dead and dozens more injured. The accident, described by local authorities as a “mass casualty incident,” occurred near the town of Riedlingen, about 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich.
According to initial reports, the train carrying around 100 passengers left the tracks at approximately 6:10 p.m. local time. At least two carriages derailed in a forested area, making access for emergency responders more difficult. Shocking images from the scene show carriages overturned, with first responders climbing atop the wreckage to reach survivors.

“There have been heavy rains here, so it cannot be ruled out that the rainfall and a related landslide may have contributed to the derailment. This remains the subject of ongoing investigation.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took to social media platform X to express his grief and solidarity with the victims and their families.
“I mourn with those who lost loved ones in this terrible accident and offer my heartfelt condolences.”
Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway operator, has pledged full cooperation with the authorities. In a formal statement, the company expressed its condolences and promised transparency as investigations continue.
