Florida Mom Sues Dairy Farm

A Florida mother is suing Keely Farms Dairy after claiming that raw milk from the farm caused a severe infection, which resulted in the loss of her unborn child. Rachel Maddox, who was 20 weeks pregnant at the time, says that both she and her toddler son became seriously ill after drinking the farm’s unpasteurized milk.

Maddox described the ordeal as the “sickest” she had ever been, recounting how her hospitalization lasted 19 days and ultimately ended in a miscarriage. Her two-year-old son also required 10 days of hospital care. Both tested positive for Campylobacter the same strain Florida health officials have linked to Keely Farms’ raw milk.

The lawsuit claims that the milk sold at Wild Hare Natural Market included misleading assurances, even though it was labeled “not for human consumption.” Maddox states she was never informed of the risks associated with raw milk.

Since January, the Florida Department of Health has tied 21 cases of E. coli and Campylobacter to the dairy, including several children. Keely Farms denies wrongdoing, saying it sells milk legally as livestock feed and accuses the state of unfairly targeting it without conclusive testing.

The case highlights ongoing debates about raw milk’s safety. While some families drink it without problems, experts warn that unpasteurized milk can contain dangerous bacteria that pose serious risks, especially to children and pregnant women.
