Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk privately reached out to former U.S. President Donald Trump before publicly walking back a series of personal and political attacks that had ignited a week-long feud between the two men.
According to a White House official who spoke with Reuters, the two held a private phone conversation on the evening of June 10. It was their first direct communication since their widely publicized falling-out earlier that month.
Just hours later, at 3:04 a.m. on June 11, Musk posted an unexpected apology on X (formerly Twitter):
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”
Although Musk did not elaborate on which posts he regretted, the apology came after he had shared multiple inflammatory messages, including an unverified allegation linking Trump to classified materials associated with the late Jeffrey Epstein, as well as public support for Trump's impeachment. Both posts were later deleted.
Behind the Scenes: Trump Aides Urge Reconciliation
The reconciliation effort was reportedly initiated by top figures within Trump’s inner circle. According to The Wall Street Journal and Axios, Vice President JD Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles contacted Musk on June 6, encouraging him to deescalate tensions and restore communication with the President.
Their outreach appears to have paid off, culminating in the June 10 phone call that paved the way for Musk's public apology.
From Political Ally to Fierce Critic—and Back?
Musk had previously served in the Trump administration as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, a position created during the early months of Trump’s second term. Musk played a key role in driving aggressive federal workforce reductions and slashing government programs.
While Trump hosted a warm farewell ceremony upon Musk’s resignation from the post, relations between the two soured quickly afterward.
Despite the tension, Musk has recently moderated his stance. He voiced support for Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops in Los Angeles following ICE-related unrest. He also appears to have softened his earlier condemnation of Trump’s sweeping tax and economic policy bill once branded by Musk as a “disgusting abomination.” That same bill is now referred to by Trump as his “big, beautiful bill.”
Trump Responds: “It Is What It Is”
Trump also signaled a willingness to move on. In a podcast interview released on June 11, he addressed the conflict:
“I was disappointed in him. But it is what it is. Things like that happen. I don't blame him for anything.”
What’s Next?
While neither party has confirmed a full reconciliation, the exchange marks a significant de-escalation between two powerful figures whose influence spans politics, technology, and global discourse.
Whether this détente leads to renewed collaboration or merely a pause in their rivalry remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: in the ever-shifting dynamic between Musk and Trump, nothing is off the table.
