Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has flown to the United States to attend the much-anticipated wedding of his nephew and global Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Davido had earlier confirmed in an April 2025 interview on The Breakfast Club that he and his partner, Chioma Avril Rowland, would be having their white wedding in Miami, Florida this August.
Governor Adeleke’s journey was officially confirmed by his spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, who responded to public concerns and opposition criticism regarding the governor’s absence from the state.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States via the family’s private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” the statement read.
In a surprising move, Adeleke extended an invitation to members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to attend the wedding or join virtually, urging unity and celebration over division.
Despite the festive nature of the trip, the governor’s absence has sparked criticism from the opposition Osun APC, who accused him of leaving without officially notifying the public or transmitting power to his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi.
APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi raised concerns about a perceived lack of transparency:
“As the governor of all and sundry, we as a party need to know his whereabouts and who has been holding fort during his absence.”
He further claimed Adeleke had been away for nearly two weeks, suggesting this prolonged absence without formal communication was “abnormal” and potentially unconstitutional.
In his defense, Adeleke’s spokesperson emphasized that the governor had not taken an official vacation since assuming office in November 2022, and assured that this trip was both brief and necessary.
“The Governor is in constant communication with his deputy, who is currently supervising state activities,” Rasheed said.
He reiterated that governance is not on pause, despite the governor’s physical absence, and assured citizens of uninterrupted state operations.
While Governor Adeleke’s journey to support his nephew’s high-profile wedding has drawn both support and scrutiny, it has once again highlighted the delicate balance between public duty and personal commitments for public officeholders.
The Osun APC continues to demand transparency, while supporters of the governor argue that attending a family event does not amount to dereliction of duty especially when delegated authority and communication are maintained.
As the wedding celebrations kick off in Miami, political tensions in Osun State remain, with many watching to see whether this controversy will influence public trust or future political dynamics.
