Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Adamu Garba, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming the president is surrounded by sycophants who are misleading him about the true state of the nation and the ruling party.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme,

Garba painted a grim picture of internal decay and external threats facing the APC, particularly in the wake of Abdullahi Ganduje’s resignation as national chairman.

Garba criticized the complacency within the party, describing many of Tinubu’s close associates as flatterers who downplay the realities Nigerians are facing.

“There are a lot of sycophants around the president. People are telling him that things are okay things are not okay,” Garba stated. “This is not the time for flattery or blind loyalty. What we need is sincere leadership that listens to criticism and adjusts accordingly.”

Garba expressed concerns that the leadership vacuum created by Ganduje’s departure has opened the floodgates for opposition elements to exploit the APC’s vulnerabilities. In particular, he pointed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which he metaphorically described as "vultures" circling a wounded prey.

“They are waiting for our slip-ups,” he warned. “And if we don't act swiftly and sincerely, they will pounce.”

Garba also drew attention to the dwindling support for the APC in Nigeria’s northern region a former party stronghold during the tenure of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The 2023 elections showed a sharp decline in our support base in the north,” he said. “We had just 5.5 million votes compared to the 12 million we once commanded. Buhari’s exit left a vacuum, and unless we recalibrate, we risk losing more ground.”

Despite this decline, Garba acknowledged that the APC’s electoral victory was largely due to its robust organizational structure and strategic operations. However, he stressed that with Buhari no longer a rallying figure, the party must innovate and realign its strategy to stay politically relevant.

Garba's statements serve as a wake-up call to the leadership of the APC and the presidency. He emphasized the need for transparent, reform-driven governance and internal party restructuring to rebuild trust, especially in regions where the party’s popularity is waning.

As Nigeria navigates economic hardship, security concerns, and political turbulence, Garba’s remarks underline a broader sentiment among political observers: that realism, humility, and grassroots re-engagement may be the APC’s only lifeline in the lead-up to 2027.
